People with cystic fibrosis (CF), their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, sisters and brothers and all manner of friends and family make up our incredible community. And that’s not counting the professionals from all areas of CF research and care who are working hard every day to make a life unlimited by CF a reality. With a community made up of so many different people, information and support has always been one of the most important aspects of our work.
In 1965 we produced our first physio film for parents, and in 1989 our supporters helped us to launch the ‘Family and Adult Support Services Department’, where staff and volunteers could provide advice, information, telephone counselling and welfare grants to people with CF and their families.
Today, we have loads of informative videos on life with CF, and our CF Connect service means that trained parent volunteers can lend an ear to families of people with CF in times of need. Not only that, but with your support and the input of CF professionals, we’ve created over 30 factsheets on everything from transitioning from paediatric to adult care to how to claim Disability Living Allowance, and we are proud to provide practical services like our Youth Advisory Group, helpline, forum, information packs, grants and awards.
Who have you helped?
We know that CF isn’t always about the big things – our goal of a life unlimited is about supporting people with CF to live the life they want to live, uninhibited by their condition. We started our health and wellbeing grants so that people with CF could get help with those little things that make a huge difference.
With CF, something as simple as riding your bike can be an uphill struggle. With the help of our health and wellbeing grants, Sheena was able to buy an electric bike to help her exercise, and Beata was able to replace her old, mouldy shower so that her son Jakub, who has CF, could shower without putting his health at risk.
