Cystic Fibrosis Trust

Our research strategy aims to build on past achievements and ensure we can play a leading role in responding to the new and exciting opportunities within cystic fibrosis research for the benefit of people with cystic fibrosis.

We will support cystic fibrosis research within two overarching themes. We will also invest in three 'enabling priorities' – mechanisms that we will use to underpin and so help us deliver results within the two research themes.

1. Investing in tomorrow by backing transformational science to correct the basic defect

Supporting basic science to understand CFTR and enhance the knowledge base, thus accelerating the process of developing the next generation of drugs; and

considering the funding of research opportunities in small molecule interventions, gene therapy and other emerging technologies.

2. Investing in today by working to help alleviate and manage the symptoms of cystic fibrosis

We will continue supporting projects in areas that have an impact on quality and length of life. These will include:

  • Lung immunology and infections
  • Transition and adherence
  • Development of smart technologies to monitor treatments at home
  • Nutrition and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes
  • Exercise and physiotherapy
  • Transplantation

3. Increasing the capacity and quality of clinical trials in the UK
Clinical trials provide the evidence to inform the best treatments for cystic fibrosis and can offer early access to new, potentially life-transforming drugs.

We can play a pivotal role in encouraging efforts to set up clinical trials in the UK to help make sure that people with cystic fibrosis benefit from research taking place.

4. Recruiting the brightest and best to cystic fibrosis research
We intend to create a sense of "belonging" among all young scientists and clinicians that we support and will hold an annual meeting for them to share their research and to integrate the different aspects of research that we are supporting.

Investing relatively small amounts of money to launch the careers of young researchers can produce significant long-lasting interest in cystic fibrosis.

We also plan to attract existing experts from disciplines outside the traditional biomedical sciences and identify ways that these areas can be applied to cystic fibrosis.

5. Enhancing the involvement of people with cystic fibrosis in shaping research
We want to ensure people with cystic fibrosis are more fully involved in the design, commissioning and management of clinical research and the ongoing development of our research strategy.

We plan to promote research activity more energetically within the cystic fibrosis community itself, with more proactive information about clinical trials.

We want to encourage greater discussion and debate within the cystic fibrosis community about where the Trust’s research priorities should be over the longer term.

Research we fund

We fund research to tackle some of the most pressing issues in CF today. Find out how your donations are making a difference.

What is CF?

Cystic fibrosis, or CF, affects the lungs, digestive system and other organs, and there are over 10,600 people living with it in the UK.
