Holiday grants

Holiday grants help towards the cost of holidays, trips and short breaks for people aged 18 and over who have cystic fibrosis.

Our helpline can provide information on companies that may offer reasonably priced travel insurance, and advice on how to minimise the cost of oxygen. We advise you to organise travel insurance and oxygen as far in advance as possible.

Getting help with the cost of a holiday or break

Holiday or break grants are available to people with cystic fibrosis (CF) who are aged 18 and over, to help towards the costs of a holiday, short trip or break. Applications can be for any activity that will give the person with CF a break. This can include but is not restricted to: holidays in the UK and abroad, day trips and evenings out. We prioritise applications where the grant will fund the full cost of the trip or activity to ensure we can provide support to those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford a break.

Those aged under 18 who have CF can apply for a holiday grant from a separate charity, the Cystic Fibrosis Holiday Fund: www.cf-holidayfund.org.uk

  1. Please read the grant guidelines before completing an application.
  2. Complete the application form and send it in to us by post or email (details are included on the form).

Our panel meet every two months to assess applications. Meetings are usually in January, March, May, July, September and November.

The next deadline for applications is 7 January 2019 and applications received by this date will be assessed by our panel on 17 January 2019.

Who should complete the application form?

The application form can be completed by the person with CF, their parent, partner, friend or someone from their CF team. Whoever completes the form, it is important that the person named on the form as the applicant is the person with CF and that they are aware the application is being made on their behalf. We may contact the applicant or endorser to ask for further information. There is space below this to enter your details if you are completing the form on behalf of someone with cystic fibrosis.

How much can I apply for?

The maximum amount that can be applied for is £300. Please provide as much detail as possible about the holiday or break you are applying for and include quotes for the cost of the break if you have them.

What if I the holiday I want to go on is more than £300?

We prioritise applications where the grant will cover the full cost of a break in full so that we can ensure we are providing support to those who would otherwise be unable to afford a holiday. If the holiday or break is more than £300, please let us know that you are asking for a contribution. If your holiday costs more than £300, it can be useful for our panel if you explain how you plan to fund the rest (for example, you may have saved to pay for your holiday but need help with the cost of your travel insurance).

Are there any holidays or break that I cannot apply for?

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust are keen that people can take a holiday or break that will benefit their wellbeing. There is no restriction on the type of break that can be applied for, but applicants must be aware that holidays are taken at their own risk, and the Trust does not accept any liability for any illness or injury that may occur on the break. We strongly advise you to discuss your holiday plans in advance with your CF team.

The holiday or break requested must take place after the grant panel meetings. Applications for holidays that take place before the panel meeting will not usually be considered unless in exceptional circumstances (see below).

The assessment panel will use the information on your application form to make a decision on your application, so please provide as much detail as possible about the type of holiday you’d like to go on, and how it will benefit your health and wellbeing.

I have booked my holiday and just found out I need oxygen to fly, or my travel insurance cost has increased unexpectedly. My holiday is before the next panel meeting, can I apply?

If a holiday has been booked and the applicant has since been told that they need oxygen to fly, or the costs of insurance cannot be met by the applicant, then the holiday application can be processed earlier in the exceptional circumstances. The application would only be processed early if the holiday is due to take place before the next panel meeting and the applicant’s circumstances have changed since they booked the holiday. Please contact our helpline to discuss the situation before making your application.

How are applications assessed?

Decisions on applications are made by an independent panel that meet every two months. 

Due to the high level of applications received, it may not always be possible to award all applications, or the panel may decide to award less than was requested.

What are the panel looking for? 

The panel will award applications where the holiday or break requested will have a positive impact on the applicant’s health and wellbeing. It is important that the impact of the holiday or break is clearly explained on the application form.

The panel will also prioritise applications where the applicant is in financial need and cannot afford to fund the holiday or break themselves. If you have enough income or savings to fund the holiday or break we ask that you do not apply.

When will I hear if I have been successful?

You will be informed of the outcome of the panel meeting within two weeks of the panel date.

How will I receive any money should I be successful?

The grant will be paid straight in to the bank account named on your application form via BACS 2-4 weeks after the panel meeting.

How often can I apply?

Holiday or break grants can be awarded once every two years. Please be aware that if you have received a previous holiday grant from the Trust, the panel may prioritise those that have not been previously awarded.

Do I need to have my application form endorsed?

Yes. In order for your application to be taken to the panel we need the supporting statement to be completed by a member of your specialist CF team. If this is proving difficult please do get in touch with us via the helplineThe supporting statement should explain how a holiday, break or trip will benefit the person with cystic fibrosis.
