Awards support CF centres to break new ground in clinical care.

Cystic fibrosis centres in Leeds, Cambridge, Manchester and Surrey will share in funding worth over £500,000 thanks to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust’s one-off Clinical Excellence & Innovation Awards initiative, with over £260,000 investment from the Trust and matched funding for each project.

Winning projects from the scheme include evaluation of a personalised exercise and nutrition app, a programme to support transition to adult care, and adapting smartphone technology for chest physiotherapy.

One of two award-winning projects in Leeds will use a £74,000 grant to progress work in electronic patient records.

Project lead Dr Daniel Peckham, Clinical Lead for Respiratory medicine and Cystic Fibrosis at St James University Hospital, said: “We’ve been running a successful electronic patient record since 2007, however new developments including secure patient access and data sharing with patient home records (like Apple Health) have recently been developed, with the potential of delivering seamless data flow and feedback between patients and their healthcare team. Rather than monitoring from a distance, the individual retains ultimate ownership and responsibility for their own health.”

Dr Keith Brownlee, Director of Impact at the Cystic Fibrosis Trust said “This project is a great example of what our Clinical Excellence and Innovation Awards are all about - encouraging innovation in CF Care and supporting work that can improve the health and wellbeing of people with cystic fibrosis. This innovative project will have dramatic impact on the health outcomes of people with CF and we look forward to seeing this project develop over the next two years.”
