Our research goals

Our goals are informed by the research priorities of the CF community.
We will develop new and improved treatments for everyone, find better ways to diagnose and treat lung infections, treat all CF symptoms throughout the body and enable people with CF to live longer, healthier lives.
To achieve them we will fund world class research, build effective partnerships, provide internationally recognised infrastructure and harness high quality healthcare data. People with CF will be involved in contributing to and shaping all of these activities every step of the way.

Goal: To develop effective treatments for all
We will develop new and better treatments that work for everyone with cystic fibrosis, and stop lives being limited by the condition.

Goal: To improve the diagnosis and treatment of CF lung infections and maintain lung health
We will find better ways to diagnose and treat lung infections, tackle antimicrobial resistance, and stop CF disrupting lives.

Goal: To treat all of the symptoms of CF throughout the body
We will improve understanding of the wide range of symptoms and complications of CF happening throughout the body and make progress in treating them effectively.

Goal: To enable people with CF to live longer, healthier lives
We will improve understanding of the physical and mental health challenges people with CF face as they grow older, and how best to treat and manage them.

How will we achieve our research goals?
Funding and supporting research that will benefit people with CF is at the centre of everything we do, allowing every person with CF to live a long and full life. We will continue:
Supporting world-class research to enable and accelerate the development of innovative and novel approaches for CF care and treatment through the Trusts’ flagship research programmes. The research priorities of people with CF will be at the heart of all our work.
Building strong partnerships and relationships to help us solve the trickiest problems in CF partnerships and collaborations are essential. Effective collaborations promote and facilitate the sharing of expertise, problem solving and resources. Building research partnerships also helps add value to and de-risk the investment in research made by each partner.
Developing the UK’s capacity and capability we will continue to invest in researchers at all stages of their career. We will also develop the infrastructure that can support and enable the delivery of research, such as our Clinical Trials Accelerator Platform.

Involving the CF community every step of the way, we will ensure people living with CF are involved throughout the process of how we fund research: from setting our research priorities, making funding decisions, to designing, developing and delivering the research programme. This ensures we focus on funding the research that matters most to people living with CF.
