Inside the lab - researcher profiles
Since 2013 the Trust has supported over 200 early career researchers to conduct CF research. They’ve been involved in studies to develop effective treatments for everyone, to improving the management and treatment of CF symptoms and complications.
We’ve stepped inside the lab to chat to some of them. Their stories are shared below.
Luke
My team focuses on how Pseudomonas adapts to its environment in order to thrive more knowledge in this area would allow us to combat it more effectively
Vitor
"Behind every research project that you support are scientists who care deeply about their results and about bringing change to improve the lives of people that live with CF"
James
A better understanding of how the CFTR protein transports bicarbonate could lead to the development of therapies that benefit more people with CF.
Charlotte
My research is investigating how CF affects the gut (intestine) and its potential link to colorectal cancer.
Jonathan
Its really difficult to measure where inhaled drugs end up in the lungs, so I’m developing a mathematical model to predict that
Ellie
I'm using a very exciting and cool model called human gut 'organoids' to study the activities of the CF protein (CFTR)
Yasmine
My primary responsibility involves the organisation and management of phase 1 (early phase) trials designed for people with CF
Emily
My research is all about maximizing the potential for the UK CF Registry data to answer questions about treatment effectiveness
Hollie
I'm developing a model that can be used in the pre-clinical testing pipeline for new antibiotics for CF lung infections
Arthur
I’m looking at ways to rehydrate the mucus using drugs or compounds to improve lung clearance
Ryan
I’m interested in the bacteria in our intestines, known as the gut ‘microbiota’ or microbiome and their complex links with GI symptoms in people with CF
Laura
My research is looking at the links between diet, the bugs that grow in our guts and tummy and bowel symptoms in adults with CF
Shenna
I enjoy sharing what studies we have at Barts to those who are curious and want to be involved.
Nicole
I love being in the laboratory and finding out how things might work in the pancreas with my experiments; knowing my results can potentially help people in the future.
Thank you to all our early career researchers, past and present, for their work accelerating progress towards a future where everyone with CF can live a life unlimited.
Our research goals
Through our research goals we will accelerate progress towards a future where everyone with CF can live a life unlimited.
