We are all #TeamCF: Inside the lab with Dr Luke Allsopp
Can you tell us a little about your research and what you’re investigating?
Our research is investigating the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pseudomonas is important as it’s the dominant infection-causing bacteria living in the lungs of people with CF. Long term infections can become established, also known as chronic, and antibiotics are then used to suppress bacterial numbers, rather than clear the infection completely.
My team focuses on how Pseudomonas adapts to its environment in order to thrive. For example, how it gets its food, competes with other neighbouring bacteria and becomes resistant to antibiotics. These processes can help Pseudomonas survive but at the cost of the person with CF.
More knowledge in this area would allow us to combat Pseudomonas more effectively, which is one of the top research priorities for people with CF. We are also working on drug repurposing to try and improve the effectiveness of current therapies.
How could your research make a difference to people with CF?
Pseudomonas is a big problem in hospitals and in people with CF. Modulators like Kaftrio have decreased its levels and improved lung function for those who can take them, but Pseudomonas is still an issue. More research could lead to better therapies to combat all stages of infection and this could make a big difference to people with CF.
What is your hope for future CF research?
I hope and see a future where CF research delivers improved treatments and earlier interventions to enhance lung function, prevent infections, and stops the cycles of lung damage to enable people with CF to live a life unlimited.
What would you say to supporters of the Trust about how their fundraising can make a difference for researchers like you?
Your fundraising helps researchers like me to make scientific progress and discoveries, and provide hope for the future, for everyone with cystic fibrosis. I would like to say a big thank you to all the supporters for your hard work, dedication and contributions.
