Preventing lung damage in young children
Early diagnosis of cystic fibrosis is essential in ensuring treatment starts as soon as possible.
Thanks to our concerted efforts, screening for newborns was rolled out across the whole of the UK in 2007. We are currently funding research at University College London (UCL) studying the treatment and impact of treatment received by babies who are diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. The research team is investigating lung function, structure and inflammation in babies diagnosed through newborn screening, to look at whether there are any signs of infection or inflammation by the time they are one year old.

What is CF?
Cystic fibrosis, or CF, affects the lungs, digestive system and other organs, and there are over 10,600 people living with it in the UK.
