Analysis by IPPR shows worrying decline in the UK’s research & development investment since 2014
According to research by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), the UK’s share of global research and development (R&D) investment has fallen by a fifth since 2014.
The UK’s share of global R&D development has dropped from 4.2% to 3.4%, putting it in 11th place in the OECD in terms of total R&D investment as a percentage of GDP.
Had the UK's 2014 share of global R&D investment been maintained, it would have been £18 billion – or 26 per cent – higher in 2019.
Ben Kind, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Cystic Fibrosis Trust, said: “This analysis by the IPPR highlights the worrying decline in the UK’s research & development investment since 2014 and shows the urgent need for more funding for the health sciences.
“Investment in these areas helped bring us innovations in cystic fibrosis treatments and mean that many of those with the condition are living longer and healthier lives. Further support is now needed to give all people with CF the chance to live a life unlimited.”
Funding and supporting research that will benefit everybody with CF is at the heart of everything we do. We won’t stop until everyone can live without the limits imposed by cystic fibrosis.
You can find out more about the world-class research we support in our 2022 Research Impact Report.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition which causes sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system. It affects around 10,900 people in the UK. One in 25 of us carries the faulty gene that causes it, usually without knowing.
Since 1964, we've supported people with cystic fibrosis to live longer, healthier lives -and we won’t stop until everyone can live without limits imposed by CF.
Your donations help us fund vital research. Donate today to help everyone with CF live a life unlimited.
