Campaigning for free prescriptions: Cystic Fibrosis Trust attends event to engage politicians
On 3 December, I attended a Prescription Charges Coalition Parliamentary drop-in event at Portcullis House in Westminster, London. I was joined by Candice, who has cystic fibrosis (CF).
The event brought together Coalition member charities and was aimed at engaging MPs in discussions about the significant impact of paying for prescriptions on people with long-term conditions in England who aren’t exempt from the charges.
It was encouraging to see MPs from across the political spectrum attend the event. They heard directly from Candice about her experience of living with cystic fibrosis and the challenges she faces in accessing essential treatments, which come with a financial burden for people with CF like her.
CF is one of the few life-threatening, chronic conditions where people are still required to pay for prescriptions, incurring a lifelong financial burden. The list of conditions that qualify for exemption from prescription charges has barely changed since its creation in 1968.
At the Trust, we are steadfast in our campaign to ensure that everyone with cystic fibrosis can access their treatments free of charge. By joining the Prescription Charges Coalition, we’re amplifying this message and urging the Government to take action. Together, we’re calling for:
- A freeze on prescription charges (both per item and pre-payment certificates).
- A review of the outdated prescription charge exemption list.
This work is vital, and I’m proud to play a part in advocating for change.

What can I do to support this campaign?
You can get involved by writing to your MP and urging them to call on the Minister for Care, Stephen Kinnock MP, to urgently review the prescription charges exemption list.
