Government launches £2b life sciences sector plan

News -

The Government has today (16 July) launched a new life sciences plan, with a focus on investing in health data and speeding up clinical trials

The new plan aims to enable world class research and development, attract and grow investment in the UK and drive better outcomes for patients through innovation and reform.

It was shaped with input from doctors, scientists, NHS leaders and industry experts, and builds on the 10-Year Health Plan, which the CF community helped to shape.

The key points of the plan are to:

  • Invest up to £600m to build the world’s most advanced health data system. This will help scientists develop treatments and find new cures quicker
  • Speed up clinical trials. You can read more about this in our story here
  • Invest up to £520m in manufacturing projects, creating more jobs and treatments made in the UK
  • Speeding up new treatments by providing more support to the MHRA
  • Roll out new tech quicker, like AI cancer scanners and wearable devices that detect disease
  • Help companies invest and grow in the UK

We’re pleased to see more investment being made in life sciences, speeding up the development of new treatments through clinical trials and ensuring people have access to the newest health tech.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: “This Life Sciences Sector Plan represents a pivotal moment in our mission to rebuild the NHS and shift our healthcare system from one that treats illness to one that prevents it.

“By bringing together the brilliance of British science with the power of our NHS, we’re not just improving healthcare outcomes – we’re building a stronger economy and creating jobs across the country.

“The £2 billion investment will help us make the most of our world-leading health data, speed up access to innovative treatments, and transform the experience of patients. This is how we deliver a health service fit for the future – by embracing innovation that saves lives, cuts waiting times, and makes the NHS sustainable for generations to come.”
