UK Cystic Fibrosis Innovation Hubs
The aim of the Innovation Hub programme is to provide a platform for exploring experimental medicine, to create a step-change in research to solve key issues in cystic fibrosis.
What is an Innovation Hub?
The Innovation Hub programme is designated as a series of strategic partnerships between Cystic Fibrosis Trust and academic institutions, with shared goals, shared investment and shared governance. The aim is to provide a platform for exploring experimental medicine, to create a step-change in research to solve key issues in cystic fibrosis (CF).
An Innovation Hub at Cambridge in partnership with the University of Cambridge began in 2018, which was the inspiration for the creation of our new Translational Innovation Hub Network.

Translational Innovation Hub Network at a glance
A collaborative network of Translational Innovation Hubs aims to address key challenges around managing lung health and infection in cystic fibrosis. The Network will comprise at least three Innovation Hubs and will be highly collaborative across institutions. The total funding is £15 million over five years.

UK Cystic Fibrosis Innovation Hub based at Cambridge University
The aim of the first Innovation Hub, based at the University of Cambridge, was to harness multidisciplinary world-class research to accelerate progress towards preventing lung damage in CF and subsequent loss of lung function. Researchers addressed four key areas that would improve lung health for people with CF, these were:
- Designing medicinal chemicals as treatments for M. abscessus and P. aeruginosa infections
- Developing better ways to manage lung health using home monitoring and machine learning data
- Investigating how future medicines could be personalised to individuals with CF (which may also be applied to repairing the lungs in future)
- Creating a national resource for future research
It was a five-year programme that began in 2018. Cystic Fibrosis Trust successfully raised £5 million over five years for the Innovation Hub, which the University of Cambridge matched pound for pound to £5 million.

Research we fund
We fund research to tackle some of the most pressing issues in CF today. Find out how your donations are making a difference.
What is CF?
Cystic fibrosis, or CF, affects the lungs, digestive system and other organs. There are around 11,000 people living with it in the UK.
