Joint statement from the UKCFMA and UKPPCF on the emotional and mental health effects of new CFTR modulators in people with CF

For the majority of those taking highly effective CFTR modulators the effect on their physical, social and emotional wellbeing is wholly positive. For others, taking CFTR modulators has generated more mixed emotions as they adjust to improved health. This is understandable as any change, however positive, can still be difficult. Some people report symptoms such as ‘brain fog’ or headache and for many these changes do not last long. There are a small number of cases reporting worsening of mental health symptoms such as anxiety and depression. CF clinical teams are closely monitoring the emotional and mental health impacts of these new treatments and providing support through embedded psychology expertise within the CF MDT.
