Update on I-neb nebuliser devices

From 26 May 2024 Philips discontinued the I-neb nebuliser device. This means they will no longer be available to people who do not have one already. It will also impact maintenance of existing I-neb devices and access to consumables such as the chamber and discs used in the device. This will also affect the services provided by Zambon UK.

We understand that many people with CF use I-neb nebuliser devices and this news may be unsettling. We have answered some questions below and will provide more information when it is available.

  • What is an I-neb device?

Picture of an I-neb deviceThe I-neb is a small battery powered nebuliser device. It provides fast delivery of medication. It comes with online software called I-adhere which helps support with adherence. You may be using this device or may have already been moved onto a different nebuliser.

  • What are Philips’ and Zambon’s roles with the I-neb?

Philips were the manufacturer of the I-neb nebuliser device. I-nebs and their consumables have been available for purchase directly from Philips.

Currently, Zambon offer a package service in which they supply Promixin (colistimethate sodium) along with ongoing maintenance of the I-neb nebuliser device, the associated consumables (discs and chambers), access to the I-adhere online adherence software and enrolment into the I-nhale Patient Support Programme.

  • How does this impact services from Zambon UK?

From October 2024, Zambon UK will not be able to supply I-nebs for new patients prescribed Promixin, or replace I-nebs that become faulty for people already using I-nebs.

Until the end of 2025, Zambon have advised that they will continue to support existing I-neb patients with:

    • consumables for Promixin such as replacement discs and chambers
    • consumables for co-medications  (chambers)
    • I-adhere online adherence software.
  • What does this mean for me?

Over time, people who use I-neb nebuliser devices will need to transfer to a suitable alternative under the guidance of your CF team. Your CF team are aware of this issue and that it can be difficult to change the way you take medicine. They will help you to transition over to a suitable nebuliser device, adjust your prescription as necessary, and provide all of the support you need to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Please be aware that the prescription of Promixin taken via an I-neb device is different from the prescription of Promixin required via an alternative device. You should not switch devices without speaking with your CF specialist first.

  • Will I-neb stock return?

No, unfortunately Philips have taken a decision to permanently discontinue I-neb.

  • What are the timelines?

While there are still unknowns, the timeline currently looks as follows:

    26 May 2024

    Company: Philips

Action: I-neb discontinued - last day to order I-neb devices and consumables

    October 2024

    Company: Zambon

Action: No longer provide I-nebs for new patients or replace faulty I-neb devices

    December 2025

    Company: Zambon

Action: Zambon have indicated they will not be able to replace consumables for Promixin or consumables for co-medications
