Cystic Fibrosis Trust statement on rise in energy price cap

News -

Today the new energy price cap comes into force, which will see energy costs rise across the UK. For many within the CF community, this will add to the financial burden and exacerbate the cost-of-living pressures they are already experiencing.

In January 2021 we launched a winter hardship fund to help those struggling in our community. We also wrote to the Chancellor in advance of his recent Spring statement calling for him to make prescription charges free for people with chronic conditions like CF, to increase social security benefit payments like Carer’s Allowance in line with inflation, and to extend the Warm Homes Discount scheme to carers on low incomes.

“For many people with cystic fibrosis, the rising cost of living – in addition to the financial burden of living with a long-term health condition – presents a serious and urgent threat. Today’s lifting of the energy price cap will only exacerbate these financial difficulties. Cystic fibrosis is a complex, life-limiting condition, and good nutrition and a warm home are crucial to remaining in good health. It is alarming that some people with CF are being forced to make the impossible choice between heating or eating.

“We are calling on the Government to extend the Warm Home Discount scheme to include carers, and to take further action to reduce the impact of rising bills for those who need particular support to stay well."
