Day in the life: Richard's London Marathon training

Feature -

Our amazing supporter Richard, 38, ran the TCS London Marathon for the Trust last year, and will be pounding the London pavements again at the 2023 event in April. Here he shares a typical Sunday of training, jobs, and spending time with family.

1. Fuelled up

Fuelling for a 10-mile run is always important, especially when it's freezing outside!

My wife went to the bakery to pick up some pastries while I made the coffee.

2. Anything is possible

I always make sure I do a proper stretch before a run to warm up my muscles.

My top tip for anybody taking on a marathon is to start small and build up.

And let's face it, if you can deal with CF, anything is possible.

3. Getting warmer

Six miles into the run now, and despite the freezing temperatures, I am starting to feel very warm!

I like running in these conditions, as long as I can dodge the ice.

4. Preparing for festive guests

At time of writing, Christmas is just around the corner and I have my wife's relatives who live in Malta staying with us this year.

I’m decorating the tree with lights in preparation.

5. Walking with Grumpy

There is no rest for the wicked as my bulldog Grumpy also needs some exercise!

This is a good way for me to walk off any pain from my run earlier and get my step count up.

6. Sunday with my favourites - family and food

Family is very important to me and so is food!

So, on a Sunday, I usually invite family over for a roast dinner and we finished the meal with cheese!

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition which causes sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system. It affects more than 10,800 people in the UK. One in 25 of us carries the faulty gene that causes it, usually without knowing.

Since 1964, we've supported people with cystic fibrosis to live longer, healthier lives - and we won’t stop until everyone can live without limits imposed by CF.
