Five research highlights from 2023

Feature -

We spoke to colleagues in our research team about their highlights from 2023, here are five things they told us about.

1. Exciting new research partnership to fast-track treatment for lung infections

In May this year, we announced a new £15 million research funding programme in partnership with LifeArc. The Translational Innovation Hub Network will build on the success of the first Cystic Fibrosis Innovation Hub based at the University of Cambridge. This new Network will aim to address some of  your top research priorities around infection and lung health.

We are currently mid-way through the application process and look forward to announcing the Hubs within the Network in 2024.

2. Research that is being shaped by the views and experiences of people with CF

Members of our Involvement group work in a range of ways to support funding decisions, shape study design and provide feedback on the progress of research we fund. This year, they have contributed to the themes within the Hub Network funding call, giving colleagues at LifeArc an understanding of what it was like to live with CF and sharing their hopes for new ways to treat infections.

“In their day-to-day lives, people aren’t always keen to talk about their CF, but given the opportunity and platform to talk to people who can really make a difference, they’re unstoppable. They were delighted to be given the opportunity to talk to those who are in a good position to translate those insights into meaningful development”, commented Lorna Allen, our Involvement Manager.

3. Celebrating the dedication of CF teams to support the UK CF Registry

Data from the UK CF Registry is driving change through its use in research, commissioning and quality improvement, to name a few examples. However, this is only possible through the passion and dedication of everyone in CF Teams around the country in approaching people about participating in the UK CF Registry, and entering data into the database. In October, we had a chance to say a big thank you to them at our Registry Annual meeting. We were also able to share the impact of their efforts.

“At each centre, there is a desire to get accurate data into the Registry,” commented Elaine Gunn, our Registry Clinical Data Manager.

4. Improvements to our Trials Tracker - making it easier to take part in research

If you’d like 2024 to be your year for taking part in research – then the Trust’s Trials Tracker is a good place to start! This year, we’ve made it easier to find out about studies listed on this website database. You can now search for a trial by age group of participants and locations running the trial, plus it’s easier to get in touch if you’d like to know more about a study.

5. Genetic therapies: what you need to know

With genetic therapy clinical trials now on the horizon for people with CF, in June this year, we launched a new online information resource all about them. It’s there to help explain how genetic therapies work and what trials might involve. You can find lots of FAQs, video discussions and more.

Past research, funded by our incredible supporters, has transformed the lives for many in our community. We’ve made some incredible progress. But we still have so much to do.

Will you join us this festive season to help fund more CF research and help change more lives?
