The bright lights of Blackpool beckon

A new cystic fibrosis (CF) service is due to open in Blackpool later this year, offering a shorter journey time to people with cystic fibrosis who would otherwise travel to the Wythenshawe centre in Manchester for treatment. 



The Cystic Fibrosis Trust’s peer review of the Wythenshawe CF centre included recommendations that a new adult service was provided in the region, and also called for urgent reviews of staffing to address capacity issues.

Children with cystic fibrosis are already treated at Victoria Hospital, but older patients will now be able to make use of eight additional beds as part of the new scheme in partnership with the Manchester Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre.



Lynne O’Grady, Head of Clinical Programmes at the Trust, said: “We are delighted to hear of the new centre. The service at Manchester has an international reputation as a centre of clinical excellence and a history of innovative service development. 

“Due to the growing number of adults with cystic fibrosis and the increasing complexity of care required by an aging population, the service has reached capacity.”



The decision to implement this recommendation highlights the importance of the Trust’s peer review process in identifying issues leading to the development of CF services.
