Our research in numbers: Five exciting ways we’re making progress in CF research

Blog -

From supporting the CF researchers of the future to funding research that can make a difference for everyone with CF, here we share just some of the ways we are making progress in achieving our goal of a life unlimited for everyone with cystic fibrosis.

Sharing advances in research

Since 2013 Trust-funded researchers have published 484 scientific articles.

Scientific articles are researchers’ way of sharing with the world the results of their studies. Before they are published, they are thoroughly reviewed by experts in their field.

These articles can help us advance our knowledge in cystic fibrosis and discover new things about the condition. For example, developing new treatments for lung infections or finding innovative ways to track CF diabetes.

Investing £22 million in research

We’re the only research funder in the UK that is dedicated to funding research into cystic fibrosis. Since 2013 we’re proud to have invested £22 million in our Strategic Research Centre and Development Awards. Thank you so much to our supporters for every penny that you’ve helped us to raise.

These grants provide the opportunity for researchers with different expertise to work together, seeing ways to improve the lives of people with CF from every angle.

Further funding doubles our investment in CF research

Trust-funded researchers have obtained over £20 million in further funding as a result of receiving research grants from us, almost doubling the investment in CF research.

Investment and commitment from Cystic Fibrosis Trust has given other research funders the confidence and incentive to contribute to CF research too. This expands the number of scientists who are able to dedicate their research to working in CF, and accelerates advances in what we know about CF and how to manage and treat all of the symptoms throughout the body.

Partnering with over 60 organisations

Our Venture and Innovation Awards require match-funded investment from other funding partners. Since 2013 for every £1 invested by the Trust, they’ve attracted £5 in additional funding into CF research.

This includes partnerships with other charities in areas of common interest, co-funding with universities to develop new academic partnerships, and supporting small biotech companies to allow them to continue working in a niche area such as tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of infections found in the lungs of people with CF.

Supporting researchers every step of the way

Since 2013 we’ve supported over 500 researchers to work in CF research around the world, at every stage of their career. There are opportunities for talented researchers to work in a huge number of different types of research, so we’re delighted to attract them to CF research.

This ranges from inspiring undergraduates to get their first taste of a research lab during a summer vacation, to attracting the brightest and the best early career researchers to begin their careers in CF research, and supporting established researchers to lead cutting-edge studies to help us achieve our research goals.
