COVID-19 in people with cystic fibrosis

The UK Cystic Fibrosis Registry has been working closely with clinical teams to monitor COVID-19 in people with cystic fibrosis (CF) across the UK. These are the current statistics reported to the UK CF Registry on COVID-19 in people with CF. This information will be updated every month.

Figures are for cases reported to March 2022.

UK statistics on COVID-19 in people with CF

The cases of COVID-19 in people with CF reported to the UK CF Registry are as follows:

1 March 2020 – 31 March 2022

  • Number of cases: 2,001
  • Hospitalisation rate: 6%
  • Number of COVID-19 related deaths: 10
  • Number of reported cases diagnosed March 2022: 299 (may increase due to data entry lag)

Reporting is designed to give the cystic fibrosis community a close to real-time picture of how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting people with CF in the UK. However, due to the nature of data entry into the Registry and the pressures on cystic fibrosis care teams, there may be a time-lag in reporting and data should be considered provisional and subject to change until finalised in our Annual Report. With lower testing across the general population, figures on the number of cases in particular should be viewed as indicative only.

Global study on COVID-19 and CF

Data from a global CF Registry collaboration has shown the number of people with CF who have become seriously ill or died COVID-19 is low worldwide. You can read more about the results and access the report in our news story.

This new report expands on previous findings announced in April 2020.
