People with CF are at a high risk of developing lung infections, because of the thick sticky mucus in their lungs and lung damage from previous infections. CF lung infections can cause breathlessness and difficulty breathing. They can cause major disruptions to day-to-day life and may lead to permanent lung damage. We need effective medicines to treat these infections.
We aim to improve understanding of the physical and mental health challenges people with CF face as they
grow older, and how best to treat and manage them.
Since 2013 the Trust has supported over 200 early career researchers to conduct CF research. They’ve been involved in studies to develop effective treatments for everyone, to improving the management and treatment of CF symptoms and complications.
We’ve stepped inside the lab to chat to some of them. Their stories are shared below.
Four out of ten people with cystic fibrosis (CF) carry excess weight. It is thought that reducing excess weight is likely to be good for health in people with CF. This research study will try to find out if it is safe and acceptable for people with CF to follow a programme with specialist CF dietitian support to help them lose excess weight. Participants will be randomly placed into one of two groups. The standard care group: Participants will continue to attend their clinic appointments as normal and nothing about their care will change. The intervention group: Participants will be...
This study aims to investigate the effect of yoga on health-related quality of life for adults with CF. It will also assess any changes in physical health (such as strength), mental health (such as anxiety) and assess the economic cost of yoga against usual care. Participants will take part completely remotely (from home). Participants will be randomly put into two groups. One group will complete a 12-week course of specially created online yoga classes (the intervention group) and one group will continue with their usual CF care and no yoga (the control group). In the yoga group, participants will be...
An important part of a researchers’ role is writing up the results of their experiments and how they were conducted. It allows others to learn from their findings and reduces the possibility of others repeating unreported experiments. However, it can be a daunting task, particularly at the early stages of your career. Dr Rebecca (Becky) Dobra, Dr Dom Hughes and Dr Guy Moss shared their experiences and advice.
