The UNIFED study is a study to understand how people respond to treatment for exacerbations during illness and recovery. We define exacerbations as when people with cystic fibrosis (CF) experience worsening of chest symptoms, like cough, breathlessness and wheezing. We will recruit people at risk of severe CF exacerbations when they are well and if/when they are subsequently admitted for treatment of an exacerbation. We will track symptoms and lung function during recovery, and collect blood, sputum and stool samples to allow us to explore the different things that occur in the body during an exacerbation and how/if they relate...

Our 2026 Research Impact Report documents our incredible progress and discoveries in CF research, all made possible by the generosity of our amazing supporters. Together, we’re moving closer to a life unlimited by cystic fibrosis.
Lizzy is mum to Isaac, 21, who has CF and doesn’t benefit from modulators like Kaftrio. Here she reflects on the progress that’s been made in CF research and her hopes for the future. “The Trust’s dedication fuels our growing hope for a future where Isaac can truly live a life unlimited,” she tells us.
One of our research goals is to accelerate progress in treating all CF symptoms throughout the body. Through our Involvement Group, we worked with the CF community to shape the design of Dr Charlotte Boughton’s study investigating a new way to manage CF diabetes.
Cystic Fibrosis Trust's Summer Studentship scheme provides promising science undergraduates with hands-on experience of cystic fibrosis (CF) research during the academic summer vacation.
